Cranford TW5: a park, the Piccadilly line and the end of the hotel row

Hounslow West is the nearest station, about twenty two minutes on foot or five by car, on the Piccadilly line. Hatton Cross is around thirty minutes walking, also Piccadilly. That is the whole list. No Elizabeth line, no non-stop service from the central terminals, no fast route in from Paddington.

It means arrivals from town come down the Piccadilly, which is slower than the alternatives and runs late, and it means a guest who has landed at Terminal 5 is better off in a car than trying to connect. The buses along the Bath Road run until late and cover the gap to the hotels.

Cranford itself has houses, pubs and a park. The rooms are back west along the road at Hayes: the long-barred four-star at the eastern end of the Bath Road, the middle house of the three with its bar set back from the doors, and the one with the covered courtyard at its centre, all Bath Road addresses and all close enough to walk to on a dry night if you are not carrying anything.

Guests who choose this end of the road are usually staying several nights rather than passing through on a connection, and they tend to book two shorter evenings rather than one long one. None of those three hotels has any tie to the desk, and she walks in as your guest.

Cranford Park is the reason to be here early. The estate house is gone but the stable blocks, the walled garden and St Dunstan's church remain, with the M4 on an embankment at one edge and the river Crane running through the middle of it. An hour in there before dinner changes the whole shape of the night.

The gates shut at dusk, and dusk moves by about two hours between June and December. In winter that means a late afternoon booking rather than an evening one, which is honestly the better light anyway. Say so when you write and Hester will set the start time from the gate rather than from the clock.

The Berkeley Arms stands on the Bath Road at the Cranford end, an old pub where the airport crowd thins out and the locals take over. It is the right first hour and the wrong dinner. Food is back at whichever hotel you are in, along the road at Hayes, and neither of the women out here pretends otherwise.

What this end of the road offers is the sense of being in a town rather than at an airport: houses, a churchyard, a bus route, people walking dogs. After three days of terminals that is worth more than a better menu would be.

Lea has learned the park gate times and treats the hour before dinner as the important part of the evening. She collects old maps of places she has never been and will admit this makes no sense. Roxi fills a room from the doorway, knows the Berkeley Arms barman and turns out, later on, to be a far more careful listener than the first hour suggests.

Anyone from the hall will travel out to TW5. The Piccadilly line runs late, so a Cranford evening does not need to end as early as the timetable makes people assume.

West along the Bath Road are the hotels of the strip and, further on, the junction four rooms at Sipson. North across the railway is Hayes, which has the Elizabeth line and a theatre.
